Poop question

I have a cardboard box in Ambrose's cage that was originally supposed to be a hidebox. Lately he has been using it as a toilet, which is fine, makes my life easier. He doesnt use it to hide out in, so I was wondering if I replaced the box with a litter box with newspaper or water in it, would he understand what he needed to use that for? Any suggestions would be welcome!
