Here's what we run across from a rescue stand point:

1. I don't have time for the iguana anymore( parent) and it started out being my child's pet, but he/she lost interest after about a month.

2. My child is too involved in school activities to properly care for the iguana anymore.

3. My son/daughter is going off to college and they can't take the iguana with them and I can't care for it.

4. My child wanted something else but he/she can't keep both of them, so the iguana has to go.

5. My child came home with this lizard and we don't have room for it.

6. My child hasn't been caring for the iguana properly and it's very sick, but I'm not going to spend the money of Vet bills, so I need to get rid of it.

If I was going to guess a ratio, I would say 1 out of 75 children are responsible enough for caring for an iguana, it may be an even higher number than that. But if you're a young person, who takes the time to do proper research before getting an iguana, this means not only reading information but also sitting down and thinking about WHY you truly want to get one (it's cool: should NOT be in the reasons; then my hat is off to you and I respect a young person who does this. I also would like to see these people help promote within their peers, an understanding about the caring of these reptiles, explaining to fellow classmates, that these reptiles have a high requirement and take up their time caring for them. This would help us, if the young people would spread the word in school that iguana's are not "cool" to own but that they are enjoyable if properly cared for.
Best wishes for all of you, young owners,
HD
