We are still in the process of building Merlin's permanent cage and need help with setting up the lighting requirements. A closet is being used for the main structure. It will be about 6'tall x 6'long x 30"depth. We have been looking at the lighting bulbs available and I am confused as to what to use exactly. There seems to be day bulbs, red bulbs, basking bulbs, infered bulbs, ceramic heating elements, night lites, uv florescent, along with heating pads. Where would you mount a ceramic heating element? On the ceiling, floor or somewhere in between? What mixture does everyone use? We were thinking about mounting some full spectrum tube lamps vertically down the sides in the corners and then covering them with screen. Would there be a problem with this? We would like to get this right the first time so we don't have to rebuild the inside of the cage. We have looked at alot of pictures of different setups and have seen where the lights have been placed, but not of what type of lighting. Also we have not seen any with the lights going down the side.
We live in Idaho which is a dry cold climate. We might need to put in some type of humidifier also. Where would it be best to place this in the cage? Can you use a humidifier for humans or do you need to purchase the ones made for reptiles?
Please help as I would like to get Merlin in his final home as soon as possible.
