: Hi there,

: Just wondering if anyone had any pertinent info on red mites (Ophionyssus Natricis)? I had an iguana "dumped" on me. It was on my doorstep in a cardboard box. The poor thing is eaten up with mites. I have never had mites on my reptiles and unsure as to the best route to treat for them. He/She is a pitiful ig. All but two spikes appear to have been chewed off by the mites (even the little spikes down the back!). His toes are all swollen and red and pretty much useless. His skin hangs in loose folds all over his body! He has a couple bloody stumps where some toes used to be. The scale on his tail are sticking out like a club tail iguana! Creepy looking on a green ig! His toenails appear to never have been cut. The only positive thing so far is the fact that he eats all by himself, cleans his plate! There is old, crusty, brown shed stuck all over him. He is pitiful! Anyway, I guess most of this is mite-related. He also appears to have a mild case of MBD.

I adopted an iguana that was in nearly the same bad shape. He had all of his toes but he was encrusted with mites. They were literally sucking him dry. He had to be force fed for a week before eating on his own. I took him to a good herp vet immediately. Aside from treating him with antibiotics, deworming him, and giving him calcium treatments, he gave me a very specific regimen for treating the mites. I don't remember the name of the insecticide, but it was a common insecticide used for cattle. He had me treat the animal as well as the enclosure every 5 days, 5 times. It cost some money and alot of time. However, the iguana is completely recovered. Although he well not grow his spines back, he is now fat, happy, and loveable. We named him Rudi because he is a survivor. Take your ig to a good vet. Good luck.
