reptiles (with a possible exception to crocodilians, such as caimans) need heat to digest their food, being cold-blooded, they cannot generate energy like us mammals, so they need to get it from outer sources (i.e. the sun).
Crocodilians are not lizards, so they metabolize differently, but can still die (as happened on on their forum) if temps get too cold.
Igs can die, because the food does not get metabolized, and rots in their guts. Nasty uh?
