My neighbor, who about a year ago bought 2 igs from a horrible "pet" $tore (the same one I reported to the SPCA) asked me on Saturday if I wanted his female ig, the male died he said (which didn't surprise me in the least). I told him I would have to think about it as I really just don't have the space right now. On Sunday, I went and told him I would help with her care and try to place her but sadly, I really couldn't keep her at my house. I asked to see her and was just shocked (tho I probably shouldn't have been) at her condition. The first thing I said is that she is in need of immediate medical attention. Her mouth was open, I think first at the open mouth threat, but when she was calmer, it remained open and I think it is because she was having difficulty breathing. She is obviously emaciated and dehydrated, and the inside of her mouth is tan, almost light brown. She has a large bump under one of her eyes, and both of them are seriously sunken in, and another slightly smaller bump on her lower jaw. Her nose is sore as well.

I asked about lights, they said they used a black light. When I went to my house to make her some food, I also took back to their house a UVB bulb/fixture and when we went to plug it in, it turned out the cage was nowhere near an electrical outlet, thus the black light (which would have been better than nothing) was not plugged in either. When he plugged them in, you guessed it, the black light didn't even work! So I went home again and brought back a regular light bulb to use in conjunction with the UVB to warm this poor baby up and hope she'd eventually eat. I don't know when she last ate, the few dried out collards left in the bowl appeared to have been there for a while.

I stressed the importance of getting this poor baby to the vet asap, gave them my vet's card, and stressed my willingness to help them in every way I can, even perhaps contribute a little to vet fees, tho I know I can't handle that whole load right now, I just don't have it :-(

Well, I'd hardly slept a wink and I've thought of nothing but this poor baby. I called my vet this morning, who won't be in until this afternoon. The receptionist said the vet is really booked for the whole week and there is nothing available, unless of course I bring her in on an emergency at the emergency fee. I explained that I feel that poor baby *is* dying and it would truly be an emergency. I suspect my neighbor is not going to want to pay the emergency fee and I know I personally can't afford the whole fee myself, not to mention whatever treatment will be necessary. This is so heart-wrenching and I can hardly fight back the tears. I know this poor baby is suffering majorly and I'm wondering if euthanasia might not be the only way out of this horrible situation...Anyone???
