In Reply to: Help, I have adopted an iguana in serious need of rehab... posted by James Hawes on October 13, 2000 at 00:05:49:
James, I assume you're talking about Melissa's book, Iguanas for Summies. If so, it has a section which deals specifically with mites and eradicating them. Mites are a #1 priority. Veterinary intervention is probably also indicated.
: I have owned several snakes and have been very thorough about their
: care. However, I have never raised an iguana. Today I adopted an
: iguana from a friend of a friend who obviously did not care for it.
: It is malnurished, probably dehydrated, and it is crawling with mites.
: The iguana is about a year and a half old. Probably the only thing
: this iguana has had going for it is that it has been in a good sized cage with a good lighting
: system and proper thermal conditions. I need to make an aggressive
: effort to get rid of the mights and nurse this animal back to health.
: I have been studying iguana care on several internet sites as well
: as researching other sources, including a book by Melissa Kaplan.
: Any advice from experienced Iguana owners would be greatly appreciated.
: Also, can anybody recommend a reptile vet in the Indianapolis, Indiana
: area. I do plan on getting this animal to a vet as soon as possible, but
: am wanting to know what measures I can take for it in the mean time.
: I have enough experience with other reptiles to know that this animal
: is not in good shape. However, I don't have enough experience with
: iguanas specifically to know exactly how bad off this one is. He is
: a beautiful creature and I can't stand seeing him in his present
: condition. Please advise.
