Betadine is a better anti-bacterial/anti-microbial than mouthwash AND it shouldn't sting .... (it's also BTW, what they use in "people" Operating Rooms to clean the surigical site ....)
being car-less IS a challenge isn't it????? (been there - done that) if the vet is in the same town as you, have you considered a taxi????? my bunny and i took many winter-time trips to the vet that way ... otherwise, plead, bribe, blackmail everyone you know til someone agrees to give you a ride (been there - done that too *grin* .... ) it's not like you're asking for something totally unreasonable (IMO) it's your "baby's" health!!!! and you'd be amazed how many people you really do know when you feel really worried and desperate!!!

try the Betadine til you get to the vet ... you can get it at drug stores ... it's kinda expensive but it is REALLY good to have on hand ....
