Ummm, if you don't think medical advice should be given in a forum, then why did you ask earlier about dosage for Baytril? Is that not medical advice? Granted the info came directly from a professional manual but doesn't it fall in to the category of medical advice? And couldn't one of those "lurkers" HD speaks about take that info and use it under the wrong circumstances OR inject it in to the wrong area and possibly cause great harm if not death? But isn't Baytril a controlled substance available ONLY from a vet....or is it available "underground"? (Errr, if so, don't give directions for how to obtain it illegally *grin*)
My personal belief is that any medical advice freely given here should be used in tangent with a licensed HERP vet....to allow the keeper to have the ability to discern if the vet is as knowledgeable as presented to the consumer; to help the keeper have confidence in what their vet is telling them; to allow the keeper to have the confidence to challenge/question their vet's diagnosis/treatment plan...especially in order to prevent catastrophic outcome; i.e., paralysis in hind limbs due to wrong injection site, wrong worming medication resulting in death, etc. etc. that some well-intentioned, well-educated but not current herp vet might prescribe.
Do I know not to do/use what I gave as examples because I'm a vet? Nope Do I have a degree in something? Nope Have I written a book? Nope But I DO read, read, read and have seen the heartbreaking stories shared by other keepers of various reptiles. IMHO the best way to honor those that gave their good health or life is to try to ensure that mistakes are not repeated...be it from medicine or just plain ol' substrate impaction.
Everyone should be using a competent herp vet for the health of their reptiles...and, hopefully someday, there will be no INcompetent herp vets.
