If the tail is to grow back, or is growing back, it will grow black, with scales eventually growing over it. But it will look like a stump on the end, rather than slender, like a "regular" tail.

When I had a baby with a broken tail, I bathed him and used iodine on the tip of his tail afterwards, for about a week. It grew back beautifully, but he was only a few months old at the time.
