My last ig had some spike shedding problems with his spines once they got longer-- here is what I did: I soaked him for 10-15 minutes in warm water (pouring the water over him too) then I would get under the shed at the base near the body with my nail (while holding the spike in place with my other hand/fingers. I would tear the shed to the right (you will see part of the clean spike underneath) and tear it around clockwise all the way around the spike like you are unwrappying a mummy. Sometimes it will break off before it gets to the top or sometimes it will loosen the top so you can pull the rest off. He did not enjoy this process although I don't think it is that painful. This was the only way I found to save his spines that were so stuck in the shed (he lost the tips of some due to stubborn shed left on so I always wanted to make sure I didn't let any more damage happen to them with leftover stubborn shed. Just remember to only do this method if you know that spine shed is overdue to come off (like the others already have and that you've soaked him and tried everything else. I suppose the oil would facilitate this process as well. It really helps if you are familiar with taking the spine sheds off normally (how they slip off and from what point they normally come loose-- because it can be deceptive looking where you think the shed starts).

Good luck
