This is a call for advice.
My 26 month old female ctenosaura similis still has not layed eggs. She has not been in contact with a male ever. She has been off feed for 5 weeks now (eating occasionally) She has been digging more over the past week so much so that she broke a toe which I taped straight. I've had a big tub of damp sand peat mix in her cage for 5 weeks now. She does go inside and dig holes. I took her to the vet 4 weeks ago. She got x-rays and eggs have been identidfied. The vet prescribed neocalglucon. 4 drops a day. I have been doing this. The vet told me if she hasn't layed in 3-4 weeks to bring her in to administer oxytosyn to induce the egg laying OR to have her spayed. I made an another appointment with the vet for this monday Sept 11. I havent decided yet to have her spayed or just have the oxytocin. I'm leaning towards the spaying because I dont want to have to go through this every year and I've heard the lizard will live longer because she won't have to go through the rigors of egg production each year.Is rthis true? I plan to have this lizard for 15 or 20 years if possible as I really love this animal. Also I don't believe I will ever plan to breed them. These are the pros of spaying. the cons are that the lizard will be calmer/duller Is this true? (I love the way she is now very active and inquisitive she has always been tame!) Also I wonder how risky the operation is. Has anybody had their IG spayed? Do they recomnmend it? Have I missed anything I should also consider? ANY aditional advice or comments will be appreciated. Thanks in advance to everybody in this room.
