Povidone-iodine is much better and less 'stinging' than aloe. Aloe really should NOT be used on a wound that is not in the healing stage. Long after being disinfected, debrided and treated with topical antibiotics/anti-microbials like Sulfymon (?) can't spell today! or Silvadene.
Aloe stings just as much! The so called 100% aloe vera sold at majority of drug stores/supermarkets in the tanning or first aid section...after processing, fragrance, colors,ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL (told you I can't spell!)added to it... that 100% aloe becomes 10-15% aloe vera and loses majority of its anti-microbial,anti-inflammatory properties. Iguana skin & Human skin (except mine ;-) have their own unique characteristics. Keratin makes some substances less effective and resistive to treat, one of the reasons it takes so much longer in reptiles to heal with made for human topicals. I think someone could buy pure aloe vera at a health food /homeopathic drug store tho. But MADE WITH 100% PURE ALOE VERA is not the same as 100% Pure aloe vera....its marketing! One really has to read labels! The alcohol content in it would make it sting moreso especially on an OPEN wound. On a blackened burn (not open and draining serous) aloe (or betadine) prolly wouldn't sting but aloe wouldn't be effective either because of the necrotic/burnt wound that must be debrided anyway, and healing in the first place to be effective.
This is just the way I understand it burns to an iguana....and Im more than likely way off....and open to feedback about my line of thinking ...besides that its twisted ;-)
