don't give up hope.
You might try putting something of his with his scent on it outside,so maybe if he's near,he can smell home.
A spotlight and food under the light might help as Xta said.
Try sitting still in your yard and just concentrate on on tree or bush,,they can be right under your nose and you cant' see them unless they move.They are made to blend in their envoirment remember.
