shed eating, normal?

This must be the most convenient and resourceful way of getting ig info, where would my ig be without you all. i saw my ig munching on his sheddings the other day, is that normal? Im not starving him or anything because i put out more then enough food for him, which leads to anther question, do you all leave your igs food in until you feed him the next day and do igs eat through out the whole day?
