Well Paul, I don't know about the hammocks, never used one. But there sure could be an improvement in what the pet stores carry. After reading a lot of information on my iguana I found that all pet stores in southern Idaho carry almost nothing that I really need. I think that it is very sad. Just by putting out a care sheet with up to date information in it for iguana would make your store unique. Especially a list of veggies they should buy to feed.
List of cheap items you could carry:
large logs or branches: easy to do yourself. A nursery would probably give you branches off pruned trees. Soak or spray with 1 part bleach/10 parts water. Let them sun dry for 24 hours and there you go.
spray bottles: cheap to stock, will be needed for soaking the ig and his/her food. In fact will need 2, one for the ig and one for bleach solution.
small bottles of bleach: a necessity for any reptile owner. desinfects the cage, not to be used on the ig.
tums: good source of calium for any reptile. care sheet should explain usage and amount.
knockdown pvc cage: sure wish I still had the link to this. maybe someone will put it up. your store could already have the pieces precut and you could sell kits for making the cage. Could even sell outdoor and indoor varities in different sizes. Indoor would have 3 sides of plexiglass with predrilled holes.
human heating pads: you'll have room on your selves as soon as you send all those heat rocks back to the manufacturer.
regular light bulbs: for heat source and light. people aren't to happy with the pet stores once they find out those fancy bulbs do nothing but cost $6.00 a shot.
Reptisun 5.0 bulbs: A necessity. (Can't remember, also maybe Vitalight)
Cheap kitty litter pans: as there water source
precut indoor/outdoor carpeting: to fit the knockdown pvc cage kits. forget the reptile carpeting, they only fit tanks and to expensive
These are just some of items to start. Pet stores haven't had my business in years but home depot and walmart sure has. It sure would be nice if pet stores really knew about the animals they sell and provided the proper items to buy.
Joan (I'd be visiting pet stores again)
