so many of the 'old-timers' are off on their yearly pilgrimage to a herp show in FL. Please make sure to post your questions again in a week or so.
I agree with dslizards and xta.
Here are the products we use, followed by a list that NO reputable pet store should carry.
Zoo-Med Repti-Sun 5.0 UVB (or Iguana) Light
ReptiVite and RepCal Supplements
Indoor/Outdoor carpet
Zoo-Med Basking bulbs
Zoo-Med ceramic heating elements
porcelain socket reflector bulb holders
cool air humidifier
triple antibiotic ointment
temperature and humidity guages (the digital expensive ones, preferrably, the others are cheap and need replaced often)
LARGE limbs for basking logs
Large pieces of slate for SAFE basking
James Hatfield's "Ultimate Iguana Owner's Manual"
(The idea for care sheets was an excellent one. NIAD would provide these for you to copy.)
Things NOT to carry:
spray vitamins or calcium
canned crickets, commercial food, dry food
OLD or INCORRECT iguana husbandry information. (I will not list the names of the books here, but if you email me, I would be happy to give you a list.)
NO ten gallon tanks (or twenty or thirty...55 gal min.)
Reptile 'Bark'
Reptile 'Sand'
Any product with animal protein
Reptile 'shampoo' or body wash
'Nesting' moss
NO HEAT ROCKS! No heat logs, no heat caves
............I could go on and on.......as i think of things, I will try to add them to this list.
Please, please discourage people from buying anything that is not going to be useful to their ig in a year's time. Remember they will grow, at least, an inch a month. My ig grew from 5" long to 5' long in TWO years. This is ig reality.
xta's idea for selling only ig supplies and providing a list of adoption sites was a great suggestion. (I would support any pet supply store with these sales ethics.)
Thank you for having the forethought, wisdom and courage to ask these questions BEFORE stocking any products. I cannot express how much respect I have for your foresight.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.
Thank you, Paul!
