they do tend to be drough resistent and hardy,but they sure don't like cold,,,30degrees or lower.Try finding a varity that has larger leafs to catch moisture,,they do much better than some of the fancy ones with smaller leafs.I think if watered enough,,they don't need the humidity.
To be honest,,hibiscus seem to be the only plant I can't kill.I have them in shade and direct sunshine and they all do well with the larger leaf bushes growing as tall as our house if I don't trim them back to make them bushier than tall.But if you can find one and grow it in the house,,put it in front of a good sunlite window and give it a try.
