there ARE NO silly questions!!!!!
i have a rabbit and YES it applies to them!!!!*grin* an example: when male rabbits "come of age", they are pretty much CONSTANTLY ruled by hormones and the urge to mate, and they spray/mark their territory 24 hrs a day ... pretty much, THEY look miserable and so do their humans (me, anyway!)
male igs go thru a relatively "short" period of hormones/mating urge ... and from MY limited experience anyway, it doesn't seem to be as intense as with mammals i have known ....
ANY surgery is risky ... there is ALWAYS the chance of complications/death ... part of the problem with igs is that they have an pretty little head (compared to small mammals) and there would be a problem with the correct size equipment used to "put them under" .... ig -vets are a relatively "new" thing ... there is not alot of historical evidence out there to verify the benefits of spaying/neutering .... my "research" shows that neutering males for aggression works maybe 50% of the time ....
IMO,the only good argument FOR spaying is for a female ig WHO HAS A HISTORY of egg-related problems .....
reptiles also tend to heal slower than mammals ....
there isn't the chance of igs running around populating the neighborhood like dogs/cats (here in Iowa anyway ...*grin*) ....
and besides all that, iZ says *NO .... DON'T DO IT!!!* (he's giving me the evil eye as i write this .... he CAN read ya know!!!)
there are alot of excellent resources out there for tips on dealing with ig-agression .... and we can give you alot of input if that is your concern ...... *grin*
happy igging!
:P + :)
