: I would like to put in a good word for a couple of good pet stores in Twin Falls, Id. The Fish Bowl is a wonderful place to go. It is almost like going to the zoo. They deal in repiles and fish. Nasty Ed is an alligator that has been with then since the store opened and is now 25 years old. He has his own room with a viewing glass, half the room is his swimming pool, and he is not for sale. Sarge is a rattle snake, again housed so that no one can disterb him and not for sale. Exotic turtles in a 200 gallon tank, can't remember what type, but they each have a name, 15 to 20 years old, and not for sale. They had little igs you could buy a couple of days ago. There was about six of them in a 100 gallon tank, proper lighting, very healty looking and running around. I watch as a father with his *about* eight year old son asked about the little igs and how large they would grow. The owner said to just go around the corner and they could see Chief, a 8 year old male ig. As they went and took a look, I saw the fathers eyes get very big with surprise. They didn't buy an ig. The pet store owner looked at me and said "I loose more customers that way" but he was smiling. I went and took a look at Chief, he was in a hugh cage and was about 5' long. Of course Chief is not for sale, he is a recent addition to this pet stores family.
The other one is the "Exotic Guppy", also mainly deals with reptiles. Very friendly people, willing to take almost all of their creatures out and hold them. Recently they had a ornate turtle in about a 30-40 gallon tank and I was told that she wasn't for sale yet as she had came to them in bad condition, had taken her to the vet, and it would be a week or two before they would sell her. A couple of 5" RES turtles in a 55 gallon tank looking very happy. It is an extremely small little shop, but they surprised me by telling me that they take most of the reptiles out back once a day for their walk in the sun. They also had a couple baby igs in good condition. They also had a 2 to 3 ft ig. They told me that this medium sized ig had a bad start and she wasn't very trusting with people. They didn't recommend buying the bigger ig if we hadn't had any experience yet because she was going to take lots of work & love to calm her down.
Neither place is perfect, but they honestly care about their creatures.
One thing I noticed is that both of these places are a little more expensive than the bad pet stores I have come across. Most people will buy wherever it is cheapest. We should promote to everyone that spending a little more results in properly cared for animals. We need to actively support the people who are trying to do it right. If they don't make money, they won't be in business very long. Not only tell all your friends where not to buy, but be sure and let them know where to purchase and why.
Just my thoughts for the day, Joan.
