It just takes lots of patience, and band-aids for when your ig scratches you.
It took a long time for Phoenix to get used to me. I think that part of it was that he had some really bad experiences with the human race in the past. Just give both of you some time to adjust to one another.
I completely agree with everyone else. It's a trust thing. Your new ig needs to know that you're not going to eat him/her, and that it's ok to relax around you.
Also, I agree with Iguanamomma. After a while, you probably can pet the top of your ig's head. When I got Phoenix, no one told me not to, so I did. He really seems to enjoy it very much.
