thinking of building. Yes, you can sit a reflector dome directly on a metal screen top as long as the bulb does not touch the screen.
You need three (types of) lights:
A source for heat and light during the day, for example a basking bulb used with a flourescent UVB bulb. The UVB is a must.
For night, you need a lightless-heat source, like a ceramic heating element.
There are many types of bulbe out there. These are the ones I use:
ZooMed 150 watt basking bulb (Day heat/light)
ZooMed 5.0 Reptile or Iguana UVB light (day)
ZooMed 150 watt ceramic heating element
Realize that the wattage you choose should be appropriate for the size of your enclosure and the area you are trying to heat.
NO heat rocks, though Bad Boy loves to have a large rock in his cage on which to lay and bask.
