GASP!!! I don't do anything with the branches that I use for cage decoration for any of my lizards.
My primary cause for unconcern is: snake mites (the most common bugger in a reptile collection) do not live long without a host. And if you live where it's hot and dry, all the better. Snake mites like it cool and damp.
When I pick up a good looking branch, I check to make sure there aren't any noticeable creepy crawlies on it - more for me because I'm moderately phobic, peel off any bark that is really loose and "rotty" and then I stick it in the cage.
I have one branch in my water dragon's tank that, because of the humidity levels, has some lovely tree fungus growing.
Junior the igster doesn't have any branches because he's a free-roamer, but my Solomon Island Skinks, desert lizards, Cuban treefrogs, Jungle Carpet Pythons and water dragon all have branches or driftwood that came off the ground, got dusted off and went into the cage.
