lizards in general are "designed" to absorb heat majorly through their upper dorsum. they cannot feel something burning them to a 3rd degree burn on their belly! Which is why they display the behavior known as "basking".

Though desert species do enjoy resting on warm rocks heated from the sun (which led to market of "hot-rocks", and are more sensible to hot surfaces on their bellies and lower body parts, they still cannot feel the actual combustion of their flesh.

Arboreal species are the most delicate, since they reside on branches and trees, and so they rely on their backs to do all the UV and heat absorption. Igs are arboreal, (so you do the math!).

Some tips on using hot-rocks are covering them with hand towels (which still can burn); set them on intervals to prevent over-heating (can still happen as the product "gets old and used"); or set them on low, and monitor them constantly (few people do/remember that).

also, hot-rocks have been responsible for house fires and burn-downs due to the dangerous/potential overheating.

So please, research other alternatives, and avoid their use, ok?

take care,

Ig Joe

: like the others said, hot rocks are *very* unsafe + can cause serious injuries cuz the heat cannot be regulated + frequently gets WAY too hot ... igs don't sense temperature quite the way mammals do and so don't realize it's too hot until long after they've been burned ...
