is it "chicken wire" (the kind that's kinda twisted together or "hardware screen" that looks kinda like it's been welded/soldered together????
i've used the second kind since iZ came to live here with no problems .... BUT ... in his free roaming one day, he was scratching at the window screen and got a nail caught and ripped it out ... (OUCH!) i'm guessing the chicken wire is bad because it'd be easy for them to get their nails caught in those little twisty parts .... IMO.... i don't think it's necessarily a matter of not pastic coated .....
simply hanging on the wire screen SHOULDN'T be a problem in itself .....iZ has done THAT for days on end and not lost a nail ..... hmmmmmmm... unless .... how's your ig's vitamin / calcium levels?????? might be something to check out .....
especially if this is NOT a "new" house for him ....
iZ has also gotten caught on fabric and macrame' rope climbing toys ..... as well as carpet (when we had it ....)
keeping his nails trimmed seems to help aLITTLE bit .... that sharp little point they get on the end can get stuck very easily on MANY things ....
it happens .... it's sad .... it looks funny .... sometimes they grow back ...... but it makes it really hard for them to climb as well .... :( 'specially if it's their "hands" ......

(make sure you clean it well when it first happens) (i'm SUCH a MOM) *grin*

:P + :)
