Hi BabyHerp !
Thanks for the reply. This may be what I need to fully understand
this. So this is the way to calculate the amount of protein !!!!?.
Like I said Im no nutrition expert...
I just thought it was to divide the total protein in grams with the
total weight of the salad to get protein level wet matter...
- BabyHerp, do you know if we get the wet or dry matter (DM) protein
level when using this method/formula ???
Dry matter I guess (as the figures I get below are so high) ???
So I will try again....should get much more protein in my diets this
time....much, much higher....but it will be higher also because I
think we get dry matter (DM) figures now. Right ?.
> carbohydrates: 1 gram of carbohydrate=4kcal> protein 1 gram of protein=4 kcal
> fat 1 gram of fat =9 kcalIf I now calculate my 3 examples on diets:
my veggie1diet (with lot of beans)
http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/9079/food_veggie1table.gifcontains
9.237 g of carbohydrates x 4 kcal/g = 36.9 kcal
2.176 grams of protein x 4 kcal/g= 8.7 kcal
0.399 gms of fat x 9 kcal/g = 3.6 kcal sum 49.2 kcal
Total protein (DM?) 8.7/49.2 = 18%my veggie2diet (with less beans)
http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/9079/food_veggie2table.gifshould contain...
9.204 g of carbohydrates x 4 kcal/g = 36.8 kcal
2.178 grams of protein x 4 kcal/g= 8.7 kcal
0.358 gms of fat x 9 kcal/g = 3.2 kcal sum 48.7 kcal
Total protein (DM?)8.7/48.7 = 18%the pure leafydiet
http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/9079/food_leafy1table.gifshould contain...
6.470 g of carbohydrates x 4 kcal/g = 25.9 kcal
1.922 grams of protein x 4 kcal/g= 7.7 kcal0.33 gms of fat x 9 kcal/g = 3 kcal
sum 36.6 kcalTotal protein (DM?) 7.7/36.6 = 21%OkAndy wrote:

Yes. Most recent calculations and data indicate average levels in the6-9%
range on a DM basis. On a "wet" basis the figures are in the 1-3%range.
The specific figures came from Opuntia cactus as consumed by Galapagos land
iguanas and from comparing tropical tree foliage and fruits *as consumed*.
*********So my diets now have 2-3 times as much protein as what they (green
iguanas?) have in the wild according to Andy's post (18% vs. 6-9%).
Ok, thats more than what Andy thinks is good.
But I am not sure its too much as I have green iguanas and Andy
doesnt write the figures has to do with them and their food.But....
I have less protein in the veggiediets than whats in the leafydiet
(IguanaDen type) that holds 21% protein (DM?)??Now I am really confused !!!
You too BabyHerp ??Bye for now,:)Hakan *must eat my hat soon*
