Determining Protein, Carb, Fat Ratios......based on total caloric (energy) intake
Well ...the way I figure it...and hope this helps and doesn't confuse you anymore
not the best person when it comes to 'splainin things!
When we see posts ....like alfalfa pellets have 18% protein. Its based on the serving size of ingredient listed. For example: One cup of dehydrated alfalfa pellets have 18% protein (therabouts). The protein per cent is based on the total calories (energy) of 1 cup.
Even tho our igs don't get much fat you can still figure it out using the formula for fat.
Fiber yields little or no energy and not really important what the content of it is, but we
know that igs need high fiber too...gotta keep that microflora working!
carbohydrates: 1 gram of carbohydrate=4kcal
protein 1 gram of protein=4 kcal
fat 1 gram of fat =9 kcal
EXAMPLE Formula: based on 1 cup of raw dandelion greens: (rounding up or down here)
5 grams of carbohydrates x 4 kcal/g= 20 kcal
1.5 grams of protein x 4kcal/g= 6kcal
.385 gms of fat x 9 = 4kcal
From ^ data you can determine the % of kcals each nutrient contributes to the total
take the total kcal (add the carbs, fat & pro together) For 1 cup of dandelion its 20+6+4=30 total Kcals..then which ever nutrient you are checking on divide those kcals by the total calories of dandelion For instance protein: (1 gram=4kcal)
6 kcal of protein divided by 30 total kcal= 0.2
Then multiply by 100 to get the percent
0.2 x 100= 20%
So 1 cup of dandelion has 20% protein in it!! Big deal right ;-) Hey isn't that ALOT of protein?....well because dandelion isn't very high calorie....it seems like an awful lot. Its basically the TOTAL intake, the grand scheme! of what we feed our iguanas that counts not the invidual food item.
Currently like the MK salad and others have anywhere from 18-20% daily based on their salads...Way to high for my big bad igs...and any other ig suffering from things like elevated uric acid levels, kidney disease, hepatic (liver ) probs. Hope this helps!! I'd get a general idea of what your igs "regular" day to day basic salad is and just take a little look. No doubt it changes from one day to the next...but sure would help to get a baseline ;-)
To figure out daily protein requirements for a normal healthy ig: (based on recommended daily allowance on protein!)
Take their weight: if about 9 lbs like my baddies.....
9 lbs divide by 2.2lb/kg= 4 kg (rounded off)
4 kg x 0.8 g/kg=3.2 grams of protein
3.2 grams of protein is ALL my IGUANAS NEED per day!! Not very much eh?
Seems like ALOT of bother to figure out how much o sumthing we give our igs huh....well I guess if your igs life depended on it....may be worth sumthin checking out. I haven't even done it yet for my igs...but I would if I had to in a heartbeat. Just knowing that Ive eliminated high protein foods items from their diet like alfalfa pellets and legumes gives me some relief! Sorry guys hope this helps (and not to confuse you more!)....Im gonna be taking a break for a few...Im tired!!
