In Reply to: has anyone been in petsmart since they stopped selling igs? posted by paul on June 05, 2000 at 10:59:41:

But the birds were in awful shape. They had to put up not for sale due to stress signs on them. They lost a pair of Lorikeets from stress and most of the shipment of Budgies. Poor birds looked like they spent TOO much time on the loading dock or something.

They may have stopped selling Igs but I think this is just a marketing ploy to win public approval. Employee knowledge and care of their other charges is still despicable. They are still supporting WC jobbers and mass production farming of other critters.

Your call if you want to support this even if it is only to purchase supplies you're feeding the stock holders.

I own a pet store and I try my damdest to support local small scale captive breeders for all my livestock. I house and feed them as if they were my own personal pets. At no small expense in time and food stuffs. I spend a great deal of my time in forums here and elsewhere to get input on how to improve my store setups and I'm always open to suggestions from clientele.

I'm still in the process of improving my setups I purchased this shop from a less scrupulous owner and it's very costly to improve conditions. I AM working on it.

I have an incentive program for my employees that is based on their education on the care and keeping of all the livestock and merchandise we sell.

I've implemented an adoption program for large lizards and the stringent requirements for adoption HAVE to be met before an adoption can take place.

I wish more of you would approach small pet shop owners with recommendations and incentive that if they improve the living conditions that you would give them all your business and recommend them to friends. I think more shop owners would be receptive to this than the attacks on them that I see posted in these forums. Then you consider going BACK to PetSmart to purchase supplies to save a couple bucks. Or worse purchase online from sources that you can't even inspect the conditions that their animals are kept in.

BTW I'm not in this for the money I'm lucky to take home a $100.OO a week to support my family. I'm in this because I love the critters and really enjoy making and showing people how to properly care for their new family members.

Think about that as you support PetSmart's stockholders and while my small shop languishes.
When they can buy truckloads of supplies directly from manufacturers and animals from jobbers and farmers. I have to buy smaller quantities from distributors and ONLY sell captive bred animals from local breeders. I regularly travel 3-5 hours to breeders to hand select animals and to build personal relationships with breeders. This ain't cheap. Nor are the feeding and housing requirements.

A good knowledgeable employee doesn't come cheap either. PetSmart and PetCo both are constantly trying to hire my employees away from me after I educate them. They can afford to pay better than I can so I get screwed on this a LOT.

IF you have a petshop that is like mine in your area PLEASE give it your support. Shoot the locks off you wallets and pry out that extra buck or two to give them incentive to keep operating. Otherwise there will be NOTHING but PetSmarts and PetCos and unscrupulous online sources for your pets.

BTW Iz's Mom If you've read this far Good Onya. I love your idea for holistic and herbal therapy for Iz. A wild ig would not have a vet giving it injections etc. for it's ailments it would find natural herbal sources that may remedy it's condition. I'll be following your posts to see how it all goes. There is a great reference book by John Lust called the Herb Book available through health food stores he lists numerous herbs that may prove useful for treating liver and kidney. The listings not only provide info about the herbs but how best to prepare them for application and some info on the constituency of the herbs themselves. Best of luck to you and Iz.

Please forgive my tirade the many posts lumping ALL petshops as villains really gets my goat. SOME of us DO CARE.

: I heard that the overall health has improved a bit (upper managment sick of harrasment by peta?), and was thinking of setting foot in one again to get some aquarium supplies (recently rescued 14 acf's). I am just wondering if anyone knows if they have cleaned up thier act? Its been three or four years since I've been in one.
