As soon as the horrid owners of this abominable pet store sell that poor iguana to you, no matter what the price, they are going to do two things:
1. Realize that there will always be a sucker out there that will pay for an iguana in poor condition, and
2. Run right out and get another iguana to sell to the next poor sucker...er, I mean, compassionate person. If you really want to help igs, perhaps you could find a nice herp vet to go in with you and look over the iguana and tell them that they need to take better care of it. (Persons of authority always impress people more, as well as persons with a Ph.d) Or you could go in there and tell him that if they continue to treat their iguanas so poorly, that no one will buy from them. Then, nicely suggest some tips as to handling and feeding, or bring in some copies of a good caresheet (You could use mine if you like, there's a link at the bottom) and offer them to the pet store for no charge whatsoever. Or you could ask some of your friends (without the pet store knowing you set it up!) to stop by the pet store, look the iguana over, and tel the owner/manager/whatever something like "I'm really interested in getting an iguana, but the ones here just aren't in very good shape. Especially that one over there...Well, thanks anyway." and then leave the store without spending a penny. If even a few people, spread out so as not to look suspicious, went in there and made such a comment, the money grubbing pet store will be forced to think that maybe they'd make more money if they took better care of their iguanas. See what I'm saying? Rather than put money in their pockets and make a place for another poor iguana, you could make the store a better one for all of the iguanas that come there. I mean, it's worth a shot, and it's something to think about, you know?

Also, I'm *totally* not advising any excessive rudeness, violence, or public "temper tantrums." Catch more flies with honey and vinegar, don'tcha know? ;) Good luck! Keep us posted!

Best,
Jamie/JBug

: Just wanted to mention the mean pet store. It's located in
: Los Angeles and it's known as L.A Pet Center. They have
: had an iguana for over an year and a half. No one is buys her
: probably because of her size and because the owners up the
: price every time someone is intrested in the iguana.
: About an year ago, I went into the store, and noticed
: her. She was in an aqauriam
: with sawdust as substrate and rotting lettuce mixed in. Sawdust
: was in her water, and all she had was a heat lamp which
: was turned off most of the time. This animal is lager maybe
: 4 feet long. I wrote about this on a message board, and
: a very nice lady actually went and talked to the owners,
: and got some results. They owner placed a Iguana light,
: changed the substrate to a astro turf (reptile kind) and
: started feeding commericial food along with the lettuce.
: The owners are not the friendliest people and I don't
: do business with them, but in an emergancy they are the closets
: place where I can get crickets (NOT FOR MY IGS!!!)
: Every time I do go, I go see the iguana, she's still there
: but they now have taken the heat lamp, and all she has is the
: iguana light. A week ago I went in on one of my emergancy's
: and noticed her, she looked terrible, poor
: ig, has not had any natural sunlight for over an year and
: a half! I asked the owner how much she wanted for her and
: he said $120.00. I told him I would give him $100, he said
: yes, so I went to the bank to get the money. When I came
: back this @#$hole! said he wanted $250.00's!!! I was so
: mad!! I told he just said 100 would be ok. He said " I no
: say that". NO one is buying her, she needs a licence to be kept, her diet is specialized and the condition she
: lives in is terrible!
: The guy said, you want? you pay ! I just shook my head and left.
: Can you just up the price like that? is that legal?
