I know very little about feeding hibiscus because
I've never found a plant that was safe to feed.
Here in Colorado, they treat most plants (including
hibiscus) with a systemic pesticide. So, the
poison ends up INSIDE the plant, not just on the
outside.
A guy at my favorite nursery couldn't tell me how
long you'd have to leave a plant alone before the
systemic pesticides worked their way out of the
plant, if ever. He said they simply weren't safe
to eat.
To test a plant for systemic pesticides, simply
pull the root ball and soil out of the pot slightly
and smell the dirt. If you smell chemicals, the
plant isn't safe to eat.
I've heard that you can order organic hibiscus off
the web somewhere, but I've never looked into it.
I have a notorious black thumb, and what I didn't
kill my cats probably would. (Who knows how my
poor bonsai survives!)
