We've got a couple of pet stores here locally that do a good job of taking in unwanted iguanas. Its a shame that the one that you write about isn't *caring* for them like they should (next to barking dogs). However, I am in total agreement with the pet store (or any store for that matter) that puts a high price tag on an iguana (or any other reptile). Hopefully by charging more, it weeds out the impulse buyer(s). Does the store also sell cats or kittens? If so, suggest that the iguanas be housed near them versus the dogs.
Regarding foster homes, most of our contacts come from area animal hospitals. A while back we handed out a flyer with our name(s) and phone numbers on them. When we get a call, we have an "Intake Form" where we write all of the pertinent information down. You'd be surprised by how many people will hang onto their iguanas until we either have room to take them in and/or a suitable home can be found. We also *require* that all supplies be surrendered with the animal (cage. lights, heating, etc.)and we normally collect a *surrender fee*. Rarely will any one NOT do that. It saves us the cost of purchasing a cage and whatnot and its much easier to place an iguana if you can furnish a cage to the new owner. Besides, the cage is the iguana's home and it is what it is used to. I've also had several people after calling and reassuring them that they can give the proper care to their ig, they end up keeping them. The most frequent *problem* they mention is lack of a large enough cage. We try and help them out with that too, if we can. BTW, we have never charged an adoption fee to the new owner. Again, we collect from the person surrendering the iguana.
Feel free to email us if you have any other questions, comments, etc. I could go on and on, but won't. LOL Please type the word "Iguana" in the subject line of your email. :o)
