We also use a cat carrier/pet taxi. Iggy was quite comfortable. We used one of those break-open-to-get-warm things (opposite of cold paks) because it was very cold outside. We wrapped it in a towel, and placed another towel over it. The whole arrangement did seem too small for our 4 1/2 foot Iggy - but she really did fit in nicely. (Unfortunately she also pooped half of her body weight upon turning the first corner ... and a 35 minute drive to go! Should have seen us all bolt out of the car when we got there LOL, vet thought it was a big emergency!!!).
I felt bad 'shoving' her in this thing though, so the second time my brilliant husband set the carrier down in her cage, and kind of guided her in by 'shooing' her with a towel. It took all of three seconds - I think she might even have gone into it on her own, as a hide box!
