A better medium is vermiculite. That is what i use for my chameleons, and gecko eggs. You should know in less than a week if they are good or not. Things to look for are cavitation of the eggs, mold, and funny color.
Hope that helps

: I came home today and found 17 eggs on the bottom of the cage.
: Three months I kept a male iquana for a friend as a favor for 2 weeks, they where in the same cage.
: I put the eggs in a bed of damp sphagnum moss (or is there a better medium?), the question is (how or at what point) do I know if they are furtile.
