Hi,
I had a conversation with a herp vet not long a go concerning this. He said the tail should be snatched off at a break point above the affected area (of course only when the problem is in the lower smaller portion). He said he had far greater success with regrowth and absence of infection doing this, and yes he said it did seem cruel but also worked best. His take on it was that the trauma from breaking it off released chemicals which were not released when surgically removed.
