Our girl had a "dead" tip from the time we got her as a wee thing. Then 2 years ago in a whipping fit it fell off all on its own due to the thrashing. That was maybe 2 inches worth if that. We doctored it and kept an eye on it. Then last year I noticed that it seemed spongy. Went to the vet where he took a good six inches off; left it *open* (no glue no stitch); Baytril 10 days followed by Baytril every other day for 5 more days. It's all grown back now ;o)
I can't say whether or not if we'd gone in and had them *dock* it back a bit more when she lost it due to injury if the other would have happened or not.
But I have to agree that I hear more stories of complications when the tail has not been amputated back in to healthy tissue with a series of antibiotics, too.
