In Reply to: tail amputation - break the tail, don't cut it off ?! posted by Håkan on May 12, 2000 at 15:33:59:
Hakan...good to hear from you! About this breaking off tail (tail tip I would imagine...couldn't imagine "breaking off" where the bony prominences begin!). I haven't done it (prefering the ole blade myself) ....but Ive heard of people who report taking their ig to the vet for tail tip (lower third) gangrene...where the affected tip is simply twisted off....leave with a $75.oo bill....then it regrows INFECTED only to require some more "twisting off". I still believe in cutting 3/4-1 inch INTO the healthy tissue side as was recommended to me....reason...one of my bearded dragons (Porkchop) as a baby got his tail badly bitten by one of his cagemates. It killed me to have to amputate his tail so I was super cautious and cut just where the infected part stopped....lo & behold his tail continued to atrophy and die...I then had to cut 1 1/2 inches more off his tail...months later healthy little stub! Even tho his tail is shorter (boohoo) at least its healthy. One of the other cagemates (Orange Julia)also bitten (by Jennifer Dahmer who remains in a tank by herself to this day!) had to have the HER tail tip amputated too ...I cut enough into the healthy part of her tail first time and infection never reoccured. Just observations and hearsay...I have yet read anything about someone having 'just breaking or twisting' the affected tail off with success....just complaints. If I do ...it would definately alter my opinion on the matter.
