Sorry for yelling but I know you come on half-awake (or is that half asleep *grin*)some days/nights. Anyway, read with interest your answer to Katherine on hydration and pooping. T&Q was asking you about this, too, so I brought it up top hoping you'll see it ;o)
I've often recommended soaking for hydration as I guess I had read or heard of it being absorbed thru the cloacca. What I can't remember is whether I got this info in re to iguanas or bearded dragons and just made the leap in faith to apply it to both. I take it this may actually be mis-information? The reason I assumed it worked was in MY own thinking the warm soak stimulates the vent area to relax and open somewhat (therefore, they poop usually)and *that* is how the water is absorbed.
As to it being absorbed thru the skin.....I've heard it both ways...yes and no. Those folks that sell the expensive sprays say yes *grin* But the more I've read re different aspects of reptiles, the more I lean toward no if only by the very nature of their scaled skin. I know that only my iguanas seem to "appreciate" being sprayed/misted down. You can tell just by their body language that it feels good to them. Of course, that doesn't mean that it's being absorbed. I'm starting to confuse myself LOL Cos I wonder, at this writing, why it helps with sheds if it isn't absorbed to a degree. In my own case, neither one of these rascals will soak in a tub of any sort....trust me, I have the scars to prove my attempts at it! Which may be why they like being misted instead. And yes, I tried the shower thing.
Is there any *proof* one way or another about this? Or is it something that differs vet to vet? I'm in no way doubting your information because I know you have a vested interest in this sort of thing with your two. Basically, I guess where I stand with it now is that soaking & misting certainly can't hurt them but it may be misleading to suggest that it could be a panacea for dehydration problems. Sound good?
