In Reply to: Neutering Green Iguana...questions posted by Mike L on May 02, 2000 at 20:24:06:
I saw a few neutered and spayed igs in my days as a tech assistant for a reptile vet.
It was once widely believed that neutering an iguana cut back or eliminated the orange nasties (sexually mature, aggressive males). I believe now that it's less than 50/50 that it will do any good. The younger the iguana when it's done, the better chance there is of it being at all effective. Iguanas are very resiliant lizards (as we know) and usually do well in surgery.
Females do get spayed, although this more likely happens in emergency egg-binding situations than routinely. If you have a female and maintain and optimal environment and diet, and give additional supplementation during egg development, chances of egg-binding are slim.
I debated neutering Junior, but have decided that the odds of staving off the orange meanies was not worth the money. He's my guy, morning whippings and all.
: I was checking the recent posts and saw that iguanas can be neutered...I hadn't heard that this was an option before, and would like some further info, i.e. pros and cons, effects on health, anything you can think of. Also, (while I'm here) my iguana Lemmy had an injury over the winter and lost some weight. Not too much, but it is noticeable so I'm just wondering if there are any suggestions for helping him bulk up a bit now that he's all healed up. Thanks!
