Samantha...Agree w/ Sue2 have your ig checked out by a vet. Its so hard to suggest anything because its so important to know how you interact w/ him, what his enviroment is like...Even tho my male ig was neutered at almost age 5 (which has been a godsend in curtailing his aggression during his breeding season or not!)At 4 his owners, who had him as an iglet, and very very good iguana parents...couldn't stop him from attacking his brother whom he was raised with, attacking them, his reflection ...when he passed their closet door mirrors, or basked near a window, and even saw his shadow! He'd bash into walls, windows, mirrors trying to attack anything that moved! He attacked foster igs I had , me, my female ig (had no interest in breeding)he was a total jerk! You wouldn't know it was the same ig...one year later.
Make him the luv sock or similar sex toy stuffed animal.
Keep him caged during these periods,
reduce photoperiods,
give him high estrogen/progesterone type plant foods, like hibicuscus flowers, shredded wild yam root (natural progesterone think Depro-Provera birth control /injects sometimes given to igs) increasing wheat products (natural estrogen), or other plant products to decrease hormonal crazies
Discuss with the vet progesterone injects like Ova-Ban or the Depro (will get most male igs thru the breeding season) with the Depro injects...realize that there is irreversible bone marrow destruction which may cause problems for your ig.
Neutering my ig was a last resort/ alternative ...vets that preform this surgery report better results when done shortly after 1 year. Cost of surgery about $300.00 but that does not include pre & post surgery lab work & physical. My ig was almost 5 when he had the surgery and its curtailed his aggression 100+%. Much better for him *to me* than having him caged for the rest of his green scaly little life or euthanised. No one wants an aggressive ig. If your ig is about 4 I'd begin watching his behavior very closely...perhaps keep a journal..of his behavior maybe you can begin to track his moods but in the interim wear gloves and watch for antecedants things that may trigger him becoming nasty...It is definately very frightening to deal with such an ig.
I'd also contact Melissa Kaplan who boasts of having *had* something like 22 igs living harmoniously with one another. I don't know the specifics like ages, set up etc. but perhaps she can shed some light on the issue for you. Reach her at VIN (link below) you gotta register your e-mail address first tho.
Re: his toe...is it a claw that has been lost? If its not chronically bleeding not to worry...his claw will return in time. If it is more than a claw like the complete tip flesh and claw may not grow a claw back...keep an eye on it for infection, but I think your doing ok by using the anti/b cream until it is well healed. I'll also try and find the Reproduction link (can't find it now) Ig Tales...and send ya the link...or seach the archives for Igtales Reproduction...and you will find the link here.
Wish ya much luck! No one said it was gonna be easy right!
