Bless you for trying to help the poor fellow! And good luck-- he sounds in sad shape. Did you have to get him calcium shots for Metabolic Bone Disease?
Well if he won't eat on his own, the trick may be to find one thing he likes (some fruit or veggie preferably) and mix it up with his other more nutritious diet. This is horrible if he's only been fed dogfood all of this time and he is so old. You will have to watch for organ failure. Hopefully others will have some suggestions on how to get him eating on his own. My only similar experience would be with an ig that wouldn't eat a particular veggie-- then I wrapped it in a favorite food day after day until he got used to the flavor and ate it willingly on his own.
