I know you want to honor your commitment to your friend (I know I would), but the best way to honor that commitment in the best interest of the ferret might be to use the Ferret Rescue Sue 2 mentioned. This might enable you to find a home for him where the people really want a ferret and he would have more freedom. You would not be doing a disservice to the ferret to find someone who really wants to provide a good home.
