Shannon,
I'm so sorry about your friend. That is a big fear of mine as to what becomes of my/our animals if I/HD should die. Little does my brother know, but he's named in my will to take them all, if need be.
We have 3 dogs and 2 of them would just as soon as eat our iguanas than look at them. The big dog (Aussie shepard) is dumb as dirt and wouldn't hurt a flea.
Our 2 cats just avoid the iguanas. If the igs get too close, the cat(s) moves. For whatever reason, our iguanas do not fear the cats, but they do the dogs.
If for some reason you are unable to honor your promise about keeping your friend's ferret, the folks involved in ferret rescue are a great bunch of people who are as devoted to their "animal of choice" as we are to our's (iguanas). There is many many sites on the internet that lists the ferret rescue groups. I have no doubt that if you must give up the ferret, you should have no trouble placing him/her. Also, keep in mind that some states and counties deem ferrets illegal to own. That's something you'll need to check out too.
Good luck.
Sue2
