In Reply to: Can a wild iguana be a pet? posted by Lori on April 24, 2000 at 12:28:36:
I would say that unless you live in some parts of Florida, Hawaii, or Central and South America, then what you have is a pet iguana that got loose and has been living for however long out in the world and not in a cage or house.
The ig will not like being in a cage or in a house if it has been out for sometime. Even caged igs from the pet store or long in captivity want to get out.
The question is: is it safer in a large and well provided enclosure or out in the woods. Out in the woods they have a very real danger of death or injury by people, pets, wild animals, cars, etc. However, in a cage, you may have some guilty feelings, along with the responsibility of making the ig's life as stressless and healthy as possible ( that means feeding, vet visits, climate control, socialization, freedom to move about, etc, etc.). I have had "wild" reptiles in captivity that appeared to be ok and would "tame" down after a period of time. It just took me a lot of time, money and patience. Regarless of how you think the ig feels, you need to ask yourself if you are ready to have an ig as a pet, no matter how it reacts to you.
