For safe claw trimming, only clip off the very tip.
You'll notice that the nail has a thicker 'body', and a sharp, pointed end/tip. That's the part to clip off, without being too close to the thicker part (which contains a blood vessel), and file if willing.
Filing nails helps a lot, because even clipped nails can still be sharp and rough on your skin. If your iguana is tame enough, it should tolerate filing.
Make sure it can still climb on branches etc. though. If claws are too smooth, the lizard can lose its grip, fall, and injure itself.
C-YA!
: I clipped Andre's nails yesterday. I
: must say she was very good about it.
: I used those dog nail type clippers.
: How do I tell how short I can clip?
: I was scared to clip very much off and
: just took off the very end. Her nails
: are so long she looks like Edward Scissorhands!
: I'm just so scared I'll hurt her just when
: we're getting along so well and I sure
: don't want her to bleed. I saw the diagrams
: someone posted awhile back but couldn't
: relate them to Andre's nails. Her nails
: are almost 1/2" long on her hands and a little
: shorter on her feet.
: Cheryl
: ps Let her free roam the bathroom too. She
: found some fuzz/dog/cat hair behind the toilet
: and ate it so mom had to pick it out of her mouth,
: then she dumped the trash can. We had a great time!!
