Leash for Lizzy

I want to take Lizzy outside more since the weather is warming up. I tried one of those harness kind a while back and she went nuts. Today I tried a very thin, small dog leash that just has the ring at the end. She's over 4 ft. long now. I pulled the leash through the ring and slipped it over her head. She was OK with it and it wasn't tight, until she decided to climb into the shrubbery. I wouldn't let her, so she did her crocodile rolls. I was afraid she would get loose so I picked her up. (I now have the battle scars I guess she thought I deserved!) What is the best way to take her outside?
