In Reply to: Ceramic Heating Element Question.... posted by Matt Cooksey on April 18, 2000 at 13:56:32:
For a cage that size I would recommend getting at least a 100 watt. We run our ceramic heaters 24/7 unless the outside temp is above 85 degrees and a low at night of no less than 75 degrees. We also use additional heat when needed by way of base board heat. Lately, we haven't needed the base board heat since the ceramic heaters will keep the whole room in the upper 70's to mid 80's, between the four of them. We have two that are mounted on the tops of the cages and two that are hanging inside the cages. We determined which way by the distance to the iguana. If the iguana can't be close enough to get the needed heat from the ceramic heater, we mounted it inside the cage, ( note: we only use the cord as the hanging device- reason, so if the iguana tried to jump on to the dome, it would tip and he'd fall off of it ) They are climbers, so care must be taken when determining if you can mount the unit inside the cage or not. With our iguana "Lola" we don't have to worry, she knows what it's for, so we have it very low in her cage. If she's cool, she'll move over there and lay for awhile, but as far as wanting to climb it, she's NOT interested. Now on the other hand, we have O'Malley....this dude would climb anything if he could!! So the unit in his cage is hanging farther away from him.
hope this helps
