My daughter recently visited a friend of a friend. These people own an iguana which they are not taking proper care of. When my daughter told me the condition of the iguana, her cage, her food, etc... well, it just makes me sick. I got their phone number and talked to the husband of the owner. I was TRYING to be polite, but what do you say to these people?? His wife was the actual owner and won't be back until Wednesday. I asked him if they were interested in getting rid of their iguana because I had heard they were tired of taking care of her. What do you say to people without insulting them? I doubt very much they would give ME the iguana if I sat there and berated their capabilities, but man, it's hard not to be critical when they are doing so many things obviously wrong and the poor iguana is suffering. The husband actually asked me if I wanted to BUY it, saying it was worth about $85 (in a tiny cage with half her tail missing, probably has MBD, and is a total wreck falling off her basking branch constantly...grrrr). Can you believe the nerve of some people?? I told him I was NOT interested in purchasing it, as I already had a healthy iguana but that if they were tired of taking care of theirs I would take it off their hands.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to approach the owner when I call her Wednesday? I don't believe that the humane society around my area has enough information about iguanas to know that this one is in a bad situation, so threatening to call someone and turn them in probably won't work... I need to go about it nicely. Any experiences? Thanks.
