i have a little flashlight that is specially for my pet's claw trimming ... if you hold the light right up against the nail, it should be very obvious *where* the vein ends ... this has worked for my bunny's black claws as well as the pup's white/pink claws and iZ's fairly dark talons ...
i use human nail clippers + the only time i've noticed a problem with iZ's nail splitting is if i don't replace the clippers often enough and they're starting to get a bit dull ... (i use the *big* size clippers, btw) ... now, i *have* noticed that problem with the pup + he has graduated to 'real' pet-nail clippers ...
