: OK Zookie has made the lower shelf his spot to bask He is 24 inches from a 36" 30wt. fluorescent daycyle light. I saw a chart some place they gave the maxium distace the rays travel, but can't find it now. We are also working on getting him up a level,Iwould rather do that then put the light inside the cage.Any links to the chart would be helpful. From the ungreatful Zookie, whos parents built him a NEW cage.( We know he will get to love it... some day)
First you need to ensure that you are using a bulb which is emitting UV light. The ZooMed bulbs only emit approx 10 microwatts/2cm of UV with a MAXIMUM distance of 12 inches! To give you an idea of how strong/weak these bulbs are I can tell you that on an average day in Texas there is approx 15 mw/2cm in the shade!
I would recommend the UVHeat bulbs. They produce up to 50 mw on a 100 watt bulb and are easy to use. Go to www.uvheat.com. They also have a much father penetration rate. Their penetration rate is in feet rather than inches.
