Good going Cliff....the only thing I would of done differently is skip the alcohol...and used just the anti/b ointment once the bleeding stopped! Alcohol might not only be painful (^sting) but also has been known to kill healthy tissue as well(same as hydrogen peroxide)...even just a betadine applied to the stump would be great for disinfecting the stump and deter infection.....but enuff said....Does the tail stump look jagged or is a pretty clean break?
One thing about simple tail tip amputation stories and VETS --- The vet WILL sell you Baytril, and any other anti/b medication whether IM or po to make a sale...warranted or not..side effects or not....Just my experience I know not ALL vets engage in this practice so don't jump down my throat so quickly ;-)...but all too many times Ive been told..."doesn't need it but I'll give him/her ______ (fill in the blank ) if you want me too" ....but since YOU have done pretty much everything to insure infection has not had the opportunity to invade from the get go...I would wait a few weeks and see if a good scab forms...within two months you will be able to assess whether the new regrowth is thriving (a new brownish or black nub appears that is vascular and healthy in appearance) or dying...necotizing...tail rot (looking like a dried up, black stiff piece of clotted up- like stick ...Im hoping you're done w/ breakfast when you read this!).... If it looks like the latter then post back or take your ig to the vet then!...you may have to amputate a bit more because infection has gotten at it and it will continue to radiate up the tail until amputated correctly! Im proud of you Cliff..its soooo scary the first time isn't it! Keep us posted!!
